Fall is upon us and Thanksgiving is just weeks away. As I am preparing this newsletter, I’m reminded of the fact that life is better than I deserve, which is saying alot these days. We have tragically and suddenly lost two close friends this year and the world is full of anger, pain, suffering, hardship, turmoil, disappointment and regret. So the fact that I can be thankful and mean it is, in its own way, a small miracle...
I’m learning there is a responsibility that comes with privilege. That I am blessed to bless. Gifted to give. I am not lucky, fortunate, or merely disciplined; I am expected to do something with the grace I’ve been given. And so are you.
When I was younger, I didn’t understand gratitude. In a world that seemed to hurt for no reason, giving thanks felt disingenuous. Living in a world where children die of hunger every day, it just didn’t make sense. But now I understand. Being grateful is a choice.
So today, I chose to make a list.
The Gratitude List
Here’s my challenge to you: Take some time today, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, to come up with a gratitude list. If it doesn’t come to you quickly, let it come gradually. To each of us there is much to be thankful for, if we only have eyes to see.
Here are my 10 reasons to give thanks today:
I am thankful for my health, for being able to hear sweet music, for being able to see the beauty around me, for being able to walk and hike and feel the ground beneath my feet.
I am thankful for my husband and partner who vowed to be my biggest fan on the day we were married and has never once let me down.
I am thankful for the gift of being a hairdresser and giving me the years to master it.—Though it’s sometimes frustrating, it's always been rewarding.
I am extremely thankful for our clients that are beautiful inside and out! I have received a masters in education from their life wisdom over this many years.
I am thankful for doing work that matters.Work that helps someone feel better about themselves.
I am thankful for living in a town full of creative and inspirational minds and opportunities
I am thankful for our sweet sweet dogs — even if it seems they have to go out every 5 minutes.
I am thankful for our friends and family that I love immensely!
I am thankful for the beauty that God has surrounded us with, from our rich forest that have been preserved for our enjoyment and recreation to the beauty of the human heart to help another, for the eyes to see it and the hands to capture it through my art.
I am thankful for Grace — for love that cannot be explained (only surrendered to), for a Creator that inspires creativity, for purpose and a hope that there is more to the story than we see.
